Pyramus and Thisbe is a myth about the Romeo and Juliet of Babylon, told by the Roman Poet Ovid. Pyramus and Thisbe whispered back and forth through a crack in the wall of their homes, falling in love. Forbidden to be together by their parents, they plotted to run away. Thisbe arrives under the mulberry tree first; seeing a lioness, face bloodied from a recent kill, she runs, leaving her veil behind. Pyramus, arriving late to the meeting point, sees the veil torn and stained with blood. In agony over what he thinks is the death of his love, he falls on his sword to join her in death. Blood spills out and turns the mulberries from white to red. Thisbe returns and takes his sword and kills herself as well. The Gods, seeing this great love turn all mulberries a dark red in honor of Thisbe and Pyramus love. Carved in a porcelain slip on a dark brown plate.
